The middle path between landscaping and redesign.

Every jurisdiction that writes an aesthetic requirement is describing three possible responses without naming a preferred one. Landscaping is the reflex. Redesign is the nuclear option. Treatment is the answer they're describing without saying it explicitly.

Screening trees take 15–20 years to approach the height of a data center wall, and most don't survive the concrete-heavy environment of an industrial site. Leyland cypress — the default choice — tops out around 35 feet against a wall that may be 50 or 60 feet tall. They don't solve the visual problem, and most jurisdictions have noticed.

Full architectural redesign works. It also means structural changes, permit restarts in some jurisdictions, and cost measured in millions before the treatment budget is even touched. For most projects the schedule alone makes it a non-starter.

Large-scale facade patterning changes how a building reads from the street without touching the envelope.
